Prompting
The quality of the output of the AI author assist is highly dependent on the quality of the used prompt. Our internal mathematics team has tested the tool on a wide range of authoring tasks.
The output will often be good enough to be used right away, but human review is always encouraged.
We strongly recommend using the AI author assist can for Open, Open Free, Radio Button, Multiple Choice, Drag n Drop, Group Order, and Rank Order exercises.
To improve performance on each tab, the prompts are defined specifically per tab:
- "Texts" tab: the AI author assist writes texts for all fields in the Texts environment, including recommendations for optional fields such as hints, placeholder input, pre-input, and post-input. The texts are formatted using LaTeX for mathematics expressions.
- "Variables" tab: AI author assist provides Maxima, Python, R, or PHP code suggestions for randomized variables and problem solutions (needed in the "Solution" tab) for the exercise/question in the "Texts tab". It has access to the all the texts in the "Texts" tab and will create the requested variables for the exercise present there. If no question has been written, the user can also explain the intended question at this stage and the AI author assist will create variables accordingly.
- "Labels" tab: AI author assist provides label suggestions for the question in the "Texts" tab.
How to enable AI author assist?
AI author assist is enabled per school, which allows all users with author access to use it. If you don't see the AI assist widget, speak to your functional managers or other colleagues who are in contact with our team. The decision to use AI author assist is made for your entire institution.
AI version
Sowiso uses GPT-5.2* in the API as a text model for the AI author assist tool in the exercise creation/editing (the following is a summary of the most relevant characteristics of the model for our tool, for more details see OpenAI's specifications).
The key dataset components that contribute to GPT-5.2’s capabilities are:
- Web Data - Data from public web pages provides a rich and diverse range of information, ensuring the model learns from a wide variety of perspectives and topics.
- Code and math - Including code and math data in training helps the model develop robust reasoning skills by exposing it to structured logic and problem-solving processes.
- Multimodal data - OpenAI's dataset includes images, audio, and video to teach the LLMs how to interpret and generate non-textual input and output.
Data processing 🔐
The model integrated into Sowiso has access only to the exercise in scope, its contents and details per tab. No other content objects, private data or learning performance data from the student is accessed by the model. It's important to be careful and not share any private or personal information with the AI author assist.
